The Sacrament of Marriage

A covenant of love blessed by God

What is the Sacrament of Marriage?

Sacramental marriage is a mutual gift that a man and a woman give to each other. It is celebrated in the presence of a priest or deacon, who represents the Church and invokes God's blessing on the couple.

This sacrament is a covenant of love, a living image of Christ's love for his Church.

The requirements for receiving the Sacrament of Marriage

1

Free consent

The future spouses must say “I do” of their own free will, without fear or coercion.

2

A lifelong, exclusive commitment

Marriage is an indissoluble union, open to welcoming children.

3

The absence of obstacles

No natural or ecclesial impediment (such as a prior marriage or a vow of celibacy) should stand in the way of the union.

The Foundations of Christian Marriage

1

A free and informed “yes”

The spouses commit themselves voluntarily and with full knowledge of what they are doing.

2

An exclusive, lifelong union

Marriage is a promise of faithful and lasting love.

3

Openness to life

The spouses welcome children as a gift from God. These elements make marriage a living image of Christ's love for his Church.
