Baptism: The Gateway to Christian Life
Plunge into God’s unconditional love and join the community of the Church
Baptism, the Foundation of Christian Life
Baptism is the first sacrament of Christian life. It marks entry into the Church and communion with God.
Through Baptism, we are freed from sin, become members of Christ and enter into a new life guided by the love of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Why Receive Baptism?
An Act of Love
Baptism is an immersion in God’s unconditional love.
A New Life
It marks the beginning of a journey of faith and conversion.
A Sense of Belonging
Baptism incorporates us into the Christian community, where we grow together with our brothers and sisters in Christ.
How Does Baptism Take Place?
The Rite of Water
The priest or deacon pours water three times over the head of the person being baptized, saying: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
Signs and Symbols
The anointing: With holy chrism, it marks belonging to Christ.
The white garment: A symbol of purity and new life.
The baptismal candle: Lit from the Paschal candle, it represents the light of Christ.
