History
Established around 1786
First church: 1911
First parish priest: 1915
The first settlers in this region were a few Portuguese, followed later by Scots, Irish, and some Acadians. The latter arrived last and settled in Escuminac and Hardwick. Around 1896, several families migrated from the Magdalen Islands to Baie-Sainte-Anne.
From 1800 to 1910, this region was a mission area of the Village of Richibouctou. Several missionaries carried out their ministry here. Bishop Plessis of Quebec, on a pastoral tour of Acadia, stopped there on June 19, 1812.
The present-day parish of Baie Sainte-Anne was formerly part of the thirteen-mile-long parish of Stella Maris in Escuminac. A new church was built between 1910 and 1915 on its current site. The exterior of the church and sacristy was completed around 1917. The interior of the sacristy and church was finished later, between 1920 and 1929. The entire structure is an imposing cut-stone building with two towers and a steeple. This church is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful in Northumberland County.
