History
Established around 1813
First church: 1821
First parish priest: 1939
Established around 1813 by several Acadian families, the population of "Pointe au Grand Sapin" was served by missionary priests from Richibouctou-Village for many years. There was probably a chapel around 1821, the date of the first parish registers.
In 1849, the residents of Pointe au Grand Sapin began construction of a small chapel, under the direction of Father Hugh McGuirk, the parish priest of Saint-Louis.
In 1884, Father Edmond Pattenaude had a larger church and a sacristy built.
In 1939, Father Camille D. Cormier became the founding parish priest of Saint-Joseph de Pointe-Sapin and its first resident priest.
In 1947, the Pointe-Sapin parish church burned down.
The following year, Father Oscar Gaudet had the current church built. The cornerstone of this new church was blessed by Bishop Norbert Robichaud on August 28, 1949.
Current situation of our parish
Today, Saint Joseph Parish in Pointe-Sapin is moderated by Father Mario Doyle, C.Ss.R. Father Gilbert Lévesque, C.Ss.R., is assistant moderator.
It has approximately 500 parishioners. Thanks to their faith and dedication, many volunteers continue the mission of Jesus. Many people are actively involved in the local pastoral committee, the economic affairs committee, the repairs committee, youth catechesis, liturgy services, sacrament preparation, pastoral care for the sick, the "Vie Montante" (a youth ministry), the funeral committee, the choir, support for those in need, fundraising activities, the Tree of Hope project, and the committee against domestic violence. All these commitments demonstrate the generosity, availability, and determination of the people of our parish to continue the work of Jesus.
