History
Established before 1900
First church 1964
First pastor 1963
At the turn of the century, there were only a few scattered houses in the west end of Moncton, and Catholics at the time had to travel to St. Bernard Church in the heart of the city, or to the Irish mission of Our Lady of Ransom (later renamed Our Lady of Mercy) located on Fredericton Road.
Around 1950, a new residential development was built for the Canadian Armed Forces, Base No. 5, in this western Moncton neighbourhood called Acadia Park. Beginning in 1961, the priests of St. Bernard Parish, who served the Forces as chaplains, celebrated Mass a few times a year in the Acadia Park recreation hall on Athlone Street.
Starting in 1963, the area beyond Lake Jones, which belonged to the parish of St. Bernard, was separated and became Holy Family Parish. Father Angus MacDonald was its first pastor (1963-1968). Thanks to an agreement with the Francophone families, Mass was already being celebrated in the chapel of St. Bernadette School.
Father MacDonald resided at 53 Bissett Avenue. Later, he purchased a house (the current rectory) at 11 Cavendish Street. An extension was added in 1966.
In 1959, Father McDevitt, pastor of St. Bernard Parish, had purchased eleven lots in the vicinity of Falkland Street. In 1964, a new church opened, and it was then that the parishioners of Holy Family left St. Bernadette Parish.
The church was redesigned to be converted into a parish hall. Stained-glass windows were installed in 1984, followed by permanent pews in 1986. A new parish hall was added in 2004.
