History
Established in the 18th century
First church in 1959
First pastor 1959
In September 1953, a small group of Catholic parents met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Horton to find ways to bring together Catholic families from Riverview, Gunningsville, Bridgedale, and other areas of Coverdale Parish in Albert County. The initial project was to assist with Sunday catechism classes, which until then had been held in the basement of Riverview School.
Beginning in November 1955, Masses were celebrated in the library of what is now Riverview Middle School, but with the growing number of parishioners, it became necessary to move to the auditorium, as two Masses were now being celebrated each Sunday. St. Bernard Parish provided this service.
Toward the end of 1950, the Catholic Family Club decided to approach the archbishop to request that Riverview be established as a separate parish. Soon, Riverview was incorporated as a parish, having previously been a mission of Holy Ghost Parish in Riverside.
In 1959, the first Mass was celebrated in the new Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. It was built on a high plateau overlooking the entire Riverview area. Eventually, Father Leo Hynes moved from Riverside to Riverview, acquiring a residence on Fatima Drive. A new rectory, built in 1965, replaced the old one erected in 1959.
By 1976, it had become clear that the church could no longer serve the growing needs of the congregation. A committee was formed to study the situation. Archbishop Donat Chiasson expressed a keen interest in the matter. Construction took place from April 15 to August 15, 1977. During this time, Mass was celebrated at St. John’s Anglican and Trinity United Churches. The renovations doubled the congregation’s capacity to 500 people.
It had therefore become clear that a new church was needed to serve a growing Catholic community. The new church was completed in 1992. It has a capacity of 700 people in the central area reserved for services. The new church was consecrated and opened on May 10, 1992, by the Archbishop of Moncton, Donat Chiasson.
