History

Established after 1800
First church 1853
First pastor 1921

In pioneer days, Catholics in this region were served by missionaries who visited the eastern part of the province. Beginning in 1800, the missionary priests resided in Richibuctou Village. When Saint Louis became a parish in 1840, with a resident priest, Joseph M. Paquet, the people of Rexton were under his jurisdiction, but they continued to attend services in Richibuctou Village.
Father Hugh McGuirk of Saint Louis had the first church built in Rexton in 1853. In 1886, St. Anne's, Rexton, South Branch, and Chapel Point were united to form the new parish of St. Anne's. Father Harnett was the first to serve the people of Rexton from St. Anne's.
In 1921, Father Robert B. Fraser became the first pastor of Rexton and its missions. He was the one who had the current rectory built. The parish hall was built around 1959 with lumber purchased from the Easter Nursing Home located across the river. This lumber was originally intended for the construction of a Holy Cross Fathers' formation house.
