History
Established in 1790
First church: 1864
First parish priest: 1884
Like the parishes of Saint-Charles and Saint-Louis, Richibouctou, as a parish, originated in Lardouane (now Aldouane) where, at the Pointe, there was a church at the turn of the 19th century. The second church was built on the current site of the Richibouctou cemetery. In 1803, in addition to the 23 families established in Aldouane... There were 24 families in Richibouctou.
The people of Richibouctou continued to attend the church of Saint Charles in Aldouane until 1861. It was then decided to build two new churches, one upstream on the Saint Charles River, and the other, smaller one, in the town of Richibouctou. In January 1864, the new church was completed. The people of Richibouctou were first served by the priests of Saint-Louis and then by those of Saint-Charles until 1884.
In 1907, a transept (wings) was added by Bishop J. J. McLaughlin to enlarge the church.
Exactly one hundred years later, in 1964, Father Évérard Belliveau had the current church built, an architectural masterpiece and the joy and pride of the parishioners.
According to a brochure prepared for visitors, the church reflects the importance of the fishing industry to the parish. The concrete roof, with its twelve arches, represents the sea. The bell tower, separate from the church, is shaped like a lighthouse. The stained-glass windows, the work of the Italians Mario Mauro and Carlo Mozardo, maintain this sea theme.
Four Daughters of Mary of the Assumption still reside in the convent and dedicate themselves to the works of the parish.
