History
Established before 1755
First church: 1802
First parish priest: 1848
Saint-Anselme originated from the mother parish of Saint-Thomas in Memramcook. In turn, it gave rise, directly or indirectly, to about fifteen parishes in the Moncton area.
Under the administration of Father Thomas Power (1794-1804), the parishioners of Petitcodiac (Saint-Anselme) decided to build a chapel and claim their own parish. After several years of struggle, this was accomplished by an order from Bishop Joseph Octave Plessis of Quebec during his pastoral visit in 1812.
In 1839, the first church was built to replace the small chapel, but it wasn't until 1848 that the first resident pastor was appointed.
After his departure, the priests of Memramcook continued to serve Saint-Anselme, as they had in the past. Finally, Father Fidèle Belliveau became resident pastor in 1880. In 1882, the parish of Saint-Bernard became independent.
A third church, this time built of stone, was constructed between 1898 and 1904.
